Reason #7: This definition of meaning makes it possible for God to communicate to us with authority and trustworthiness, so that we may know his promises and his instructions for our everlasting joy.

What is the “meaning” of a text? Part 6

John Piper will continue to answer these questions:
1. What do we mean by the word “meaning”?
2. How do we use the word “meaning” in these LABS?
3. Specifically, what is the “meaning” of a written text?
Answer: The meaning of a text is what the author intended to communicate by his words.

Reason #6: This definition of meaning gives us an objective standard to test whether an interpretation is right or wrong, namely, the unchanging reality of the author’s intention communicated through his words.

The Bible’s Meaning Never Changes

What is the “meaning” of a text? Part 5

John Piper will continue to answer these questions:
1. What do we mean by the word “meaning”?
2. How do we use the word “meaning” in these LABS?
3. Specifically, what is the “meaning” of a written text?
Answer: The meaning of a text is what the author intended to communicate by his words.

Reason #5: This definition of meaning implies that a text’s meaning never changes from age to age or from reader to reader.

The reason is that a text’s meaning is a historical event. The author intended to communicate something through his words. That even, like any other event in history, is past. It can’t cease to be what it was. It simply is, like all other events in the past.

Answer: The meaning of a text is what the author intended to communicate by his words.

Reason #4: This definition of meaning reflects the biblical worldview that God is absolute Reality, and that he created and upholds a world of reality that has objective existence outside our minds, so that the aim of reading his word is not to create meaning, but to discover it in what the God-inspired author intended to communicate – an intention that has real objective existence outside ourselves. Reality is not just an echo of our own subjective preferences.

Reason #3: Reading a text in order to discover the author’s intention, is the humble path to greater knowledge and true wisdom.

It is arrogant to ignore or discount the author’s intention, assuming you have nothing to learn from others.

Reason #1: The Bible assumes it. The Bible assumes that we are thinking of the “meaning” of texts as what the author intended to communicate.

Reason #2: The Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Or: As a reader, do unto authors as you would have readers do unto you as an author.

Do You Know How To Be Saved?

  1. God created us for his glory.

  2. Therefore, it is man’s joyful duty to live for the glory of God.

  3. All of us have failed to glorify God as we should.

  4. We are thus found to be dead in our trespasses and under God’s just condemnation.

  5. God sent his Son to save sinners from their hopeless condition of deadness and condemnation, and bring us to God, our eternal joy.

  6. All the benefits purchased by Christ, in dying and rising again, belong to those who are united to him by faith. You cannot work for them. They are a free gift. If you have Christ as your Savior, Lord and Treasure, you have everything in him.

 

What does this mean?

 

The benefits of salvation, eternal life, being in the presence of God, being spared the punishment we deserve for our sin, belong to those who believe in Jesus Christ by faith and faith alone. You cannot buy it. You cannot work for it.

They are a free gift. Jesus payed for it with his life for you.

Will you accept it?
